Kerosene oil leak at home

Overview

Our team were contacted to attend a property where, initially, oil looked to have leaked in an internal kitchen range.

Oil staining was observed on the concrete floors throughout several rooms on the ground floor of the dwelling and very strong hydrocarbon vapours were present throughout the ground and first floors.

We recommended evacuation of the property due to the extreme levels of vapour present, and we completed an intrusive internal site investigation which involved the retrieval of masonry samples from the floors and walls throughout several rooms.

Our investigation identified floors within four rooms were affected. Unfortunately, ten internal walls were also affected.

Solution

We were able to use the results from our investigations to develop a site-specific, cost-effective remedial option. This entailed the targeted removal and replacement of heavily impacted masonry from four floors and ten internal walls.

Our consultants appointed and worked with structural engineers and building control to develop a method to support adjacent structures and ensure safe removal and replacement of any additional oil-impacted masonry.

Outcomes

Our contractors removed and disposed of 45 tonnes of contaminated masonry from the ground floor of the dwelling and replaced with new. The air was checked on completion of the project to ensure it was safe to re-enter. We then ensured that all internal fixtures and fittings were returned to a high standard.
