Following a fire at a domestic property, we were instructed to assess the site.
The oil tank – which contained up to 1,000 litres of kerosene – ignited and a fireball of burning oil damaged the property and destroyed a number of sheds, plus part of a tarmac driveway. The fire also destroyed the boundary hedge and damaged the neighbouring driveway.
We were also instructed by the insurers of the neighbouring property to deal with the damage there.
Our investigations revealed that a large area of tarmac driveway at both properties had been destroyed. In addition, the surrounding environment had been contaminated and required removal.
Material containing residual contamination was identified beneath one of the garages and a membrane was installed along the foundations. The excavated material was segregated to minimise disposal costs, the tarmac being classified as hazardous waste and the other materials achieving the lower cost non-hazardous classification.
By careful investigation, validation, and segregation, the cost and volume of material requiring excavation was kept to a minimum. Both property owners were happy with the services we provided.
